You Need a Domain Name for Your Online Business

Question:

I know some of my friends using Blogger to sell physical items. Should I use this type of free service for my website to save money?

Answer:

To start up, you have to first buy a domain name ie www._________.com. Bear in mind, this is similar to the name of your “shop”.

One of the biggest mistakes people make would be to use free services such as blogger to set-up their websites. They will tell you their website URL is http://________.blogspot.com.

If you look onto this URL carefully, this URL is focusing on the company named blogspot.com instead of advertise your business. This way, they are able to make the money by selling their companies to big online firms.

Bear in mind

Opening a Free domain account Absolutely NOT helping your business

Two Keys in Choosing Your Domain Name:

1. Choose a domain name that best reflects your business

The key in here is to focus your attention on Branding, not a sexy name that people can not remember or do not heard of.

If you want to set up a site that promotes and sells dog training supplies and products online, then a name like dog-training-supplies.com would be far more suitable.

2. Always stick with .com

Don’t get something like .info, .net or .org. STICK with .com. People always key in to their browser with the extension .com by default. Avoid the temptation by buying the domain name with other extension if your .com domain name is not available.

There are a lot of domain name registrars where you can get your domain name. If you’re looking for recommendation, go to NameCheap.com for their good support and low ‘Whois’ privacy protection fee as compare to others.

Question : What is ‘Whois’ privacy protection?

Answer   : ‘Whois’ privacy protection fee will keep your personal information from the public to protect your privacy. You will have less chance to get spamming.

Please comment and I would like to hear from you.

  2. Hey Dan,

I agree with you on the free platforms, will be hard to be taking seriously if you do not own your own domain name. Plus, all your hard work could disappear because you don’t own the domain name.

I also agree .com is the best but getting much harder to obtain. I will go after a .net then .org if I have to.

    Keep up the good work,

    Alan
